Serve Someone in Love

By Sherry Hawes

Begin with 2 minutes of Silence

Scripture

John 1:14 (from the Message bible) The Word became flesh & blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish.

Devotional Thoughts

After reading this scripture it made me think of the word selfless. Selfless: Having, exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for oneself.

It takes a godly spirit to give when there is nothing in it for you.

When was the last time you did something selfless? Really think about this. When did you last do something that cost you something in time, energy, money, emotions, but you did it with no thought or concern for yourself? You did it to receive no praise, no recognition, no reward. There is a spirit in giving yourself away. A godly spirit. It takes a godly spirit to give when there is nothing in it for you. John 1:14 is such a beautiful example of selfless giving. The Lord came to earth to give and serve in such a way that we cannot match its beauty or depth, but we can allow this example to inspire us and wash over us in such a way that we can be moved to serve in the same spirit. Can you let God show you how you can serve others with a selfless spirit?

Question to Consider I gave you the definition of selfless, now this is the definition of selfish: concerned chiefly or only with oneself. In all honesty, which definition most strongly describes you? Your ability to serve others in love is directly connected to the answer you give to my first question. I want to challenge you to be inspired by the love God shows all of us by asking you to allow God to show you who you can serve in this capacity.

Prayer We thank you God for coming to earth and choosing to lay down your life for us. You came to bring your love to us and to leave us your spirit that we might follow your example here on earth. God, I ask you to fill us with your spirit and give us the love to see people that we can serve. I ask you to help us find practical and meaningful ways to serve others in love. I pray God that the love people see and feel from us would point people to You. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

End with two minutes of silence
