The Greatest Gift

By Joanne Wilson

Begin with 2 minutes of Silence

Scripture

James 1:17-Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of change.

Devotional Thoughts

2 Corinthians 9:15- Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

As I think about gifts and gift giving, I am led to the heart behind it all. What is it that prompts a heart to even consider giving to someone else? Do we do that out of our own need to impress or to free our own hearts of some guilt? Do we do it out of love? Why do we, as humans, give to one another? There could be a variety of reasons none of which humanly speaking comes near to the “WHY” of God’s giving.

How readily would I be willing to give one of my children to save someone else’s? I’m not too sure that I would, no matter what the situation.

He speaks his heart to us continually through the giving of Jesus.......

Yet, here is our God, handing to us this unsurpassed, unimaginable, inconceivable and indescribable gift…. HIS very own Beloved Son so that I might be made clean and saved. Why? Why would He do that, what is His motive in giving to me what I need more than anything else in all the world, JESUS CHRIST MY SAVIOR AND LORD? Here is this very good and perfect gift which comes, according to the WORD of GOD, “from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of change.” Of course, there is no variation with God and He speaks his heart to us continually through the giving of Jesus, His Son to us. All through the Old Testament this phrase appears over and over, “the steadfast love of God and His faithfulness.” And herein lies the redeeming heart of our Father, the sacrificial and all-consuming heart of love just for me. Love, it is love that is at the very heart of God and the gift that HE gives to us as a Christmas present.

Questions to Consider How well am I receiving the gift and the heart behind the gift?

Prayer Father, there is no possible way to tell You with words how great, how good, how absolutely needed is the “gift” which I claim from YOU, that is Your very own Son. Lord God He is my way to YOU and to the salvation that I so desperately need. Thank YOU, Father God for Jesus Christ, my gift.

End with two minutes of silence.
